Running

What Running was like way back when… + Our Day

Trail day. The softer surfaces, breaking up my repetitive road running steps and forcing slower paces on the trails, are my favorite way to recover from a big workout.

Lifting with the girls I run with directly after the run makes it 100x easier to get it in. Bulgarian squats, lunges, planks, and push-ups were on the agenda:

These two.

They love their matching cleats:

I love blasts from the past, and, of course, I get overly sentimental about the good old days, so I thought today would be a fun day to talk about what running was like 15 years ago (when I really got into it… those of you who got really into it before me, please share more)!

Let’s take a little jog down memory lane:

*You showed up to a race and it was a complete surprise. There weren’t a bunch of race recaps online about what the race was like, and race websites were not user-friendly. You really had no idea what you were getting into unless you could find someone to talk to in real life about their experience with the course. Now, I can read unlimited race recaps/Strava accounts/IG posts about whatever race I am thinking about signing up for.

*Barefoot and zero-drop were ALL the rage. I even took a pair of Brooks to a shoemaker to have the bottoms taken out because I was told that zero-drop was the best way to avoid injuries.

*We used Map My Run to see how far we ran after our runs, or we had a full computer on our wrists to track things:

*SO much more cotton and so much more chafing.

*I feel like Color Runs/Theme Races & Ragnar were HUGE!

*Ummmm does anyone else miss the Nike Women’s 1/2 Marathon in San Francisco? Remember how we got this at the end:

*Our shoes were so boring. You had the choices of blue or gray, and the shades in between those two colors. Oh, and Mizuno WaveRiders were on most runners’ feet.

*I’m pretty sure we used the same shoe for everything we did… speed, easy, long, short, trail!

*Back in 2010, most of us thought ‘fueling’ meant grabbing a banana and hoping for the best. While elite runners were carb-loading like scientists, the rest of us were learning the hard way… like bonking halfway through a long run and wondering why life felt so unfair. Most of us thought “carb loading” just meant eating a giant bowl of pasta the night before a race… and maybe a donut for good luck.

*Way back when, 5Ks and 10Ks were by far the most popular. Half marathons were becoming the new “I swear I’m not that serious about running” distance. And full marathons were still deep-commitment territory–> cancel-your-weekends, lose-your-toenails, question-your-life-choices type of deal.

*HEADPHONE CHORDS.

What was running like when you started, or what changes have you seen over the years?

Do you have a favorite protein powder and flavor?

Strength before or after the run?

-After unless it is so cold outside that I need to get warmed up before I walk out the door.

Ever run a race in a costume? What?
