In its debut as a World Marathon Major, the 2025 TCS Sydney Marathon brought the heat, Aussie energy and record-breaking performances. Both the men’s and women’s races produced the fastest times ever run on Australian soil, with Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan and rising Ethiopian talent Hailemaryam Kiros taking the victories.
Beyond the elite fields, more than 100 Canadians made the 15+ hour flight to Sydney; many chasing their seventh Abbott World Marathon Major star or eager to run the newest addition to the series. Here’s a look at the top Canadian finishers.
With no Canadian elites entered, the fastest Canadian man was Jacob Burt of Victoria, who clocked 2:43:24 to place 212th overall and 14th in the men’s 18–24 category. Burt, running his first-ever marathon major, said he fell a few minutes short of his 2:35 goal but was pleased with the effort after just an eight-week build.
On the women’s side, Robyn Luthi of Melfort, Sask., was the first Canadian woman to cross the Opera House finish line. She placed 46th overall and seventh in the women’s 40–44 age group with a time of 2:56:34. Luthi was already a six-star finisher before Sydney joined the Abbott series in late 2024, and is now among the first to join the new seven-star club.
