New Terry Fox documentary to feature unseen Marathon of Hope footage

Canadian filmmaker Sean Menard is bringing Terry Fox‘s iconic Marathon of Hope to life like never before. His feature-length documentary, Run Terry Run, is built from 96 reels of previously unseen footage and lost audio recordings from Fox’s 1980 cross-country journey, immersing viewers in a rare and intimate behind-the-scenes perspective on his remarkable story.

With exclusive access to the Fox family archives, Run Terry Run puts viewers right alongside the 21-year-old and his team, from the streets of Canada to inside the iconic Marathon of Hope camper van, all captured 45 years ago. A 1.5-minute YouTube teaser was released on Wednesday by Sean Menard Productions.

“Unearthing these reels of film, many of which hadn’t been opened in 45 years, was nothing short of surreal,” Menard said (via Roy Thompson Hall). “Digging through this historic archive gave me a chance to truly understand who Terry was, beyond the headlines. Being able to share that with the world is something I don’t take lightly. It’s an honour to have the trust and support from the Fox family to tell this story in a way that feels timeless and takes audiences right back to 1980.”

Premiering in November

Directed and produced by Menard, Run Terry Run will have its one-night-only screening on Nov. 10 at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall, with the film’s musical soundtrack performed live by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Terry Fox’s brother completes cross-Canada journey to honour him

“We are forever grateful to Sean for his dogged determination in unearthing gold in the form of unseen footage of Terry,” Fox’s younger brother, Darrell Fox, said. “In his unique and creative style, Sean allows us to experience Terry’s personality in depth–his humbleness and humility, his vision and values–in a way that has never been captured before.”
