Oblique Seville becomes first Jamaican to win 100m title since Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt’s prediction of a Jamaican gold-silver came true on Sunday night in the men’s 100m final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Rising star Oblique Seville stormed to Jamaica’s first men’s 100m medal since 2017, winning gold in a personal best of 9.77 seconds (+0.3 m/s).
Seville surged past compatriot and Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson in the final metres to claim the title of world’s fastest man. Reigning world and Olympic champion Noah Lyles left his charge too late, but held on for bronze in a season’s best 9.89 seconds.
The 24-year-old Seville has a personal link to Bolt, the 100m world record holder, training under his longtime coach Glen Mills.
After the 100m heats, Lyles had questioned Seville’s ability to handle the pressure, suggesting he lacked big-stage composure. But Seville has now beaten Lyles in four of their last six 100m meetings.

Canadian trio falls short of final
The Canadian sprint trio of Jerome Blake, Andre De Grasse and Eliezer Adjibi all reached the men’s 100m semis, but none of them finished within the top two automatic qualifying spots to punch their ticket to the final.
Andre De Grasse gets out of the blocks great, and runs a season’s best 10.09 seconds.
The time won’t be enough to reach tonight’s men’s 100m final.
No Canadians will advance.

De Grasse finished fifth in his semi-final heat in a season’s best 10.09 seconds, but it wasn’t fast enough to put the seven-time Olympic medallist into the next round.
