When it comes to celebrating the Fourth of July, runners in Atlanta know how to bring the energy. The annual AJC Peachtree 10K Road Race took place on Friday morning, marking the 56th edition of the race. And making her Peachtree debut in dramatic fashion was Kenya’s two-time Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri, who surged to the finish in 31:29.
Obiri kicked hard in the final stretch of the race to overtake 19-year-old Ethiopian star Senayet Getachew by just one second. Getachew claimed silver in 31:30 while Ethiopian compatriot Gela Hambese Degefa rounded out the podium in 31:38.

The race went out hotter than expected, with Susanna Sullivan of the U.S. taking an early lead while the rest of the pack sat just a few metres behind.
Obiri, the 2023 and 2024 Boston Marathon champion, entered the race as the clear favourite. She also took the win at the Mastercard New York Mini 10K last month in 30:44.
On the men’s side, Kenyans swept the podium, with University of Arkansas standout Patrick Kiprop leading the charge. After making a bold move away from the pack early on, Kiprop–also making his Peachtree debut–crossed the line as the surprise winner in 27:35. Vincent Langat and Patrick Mosin battled for second, both clocking 27:39.
