How to nail your race-day photos

So, those race-day photos you ordered turned out a little scarier than expected? Maybe that’s not such a bad thing–after all, posing for pictures probably shouldn’t be your top priority mid-race. Running is tough, and it’s completely normal to sweat, grimace and get caught on the down-step. Even elite runners need near-perfect conditions to land a flawless race-day shot. But if you’re determined to avoid awkward race photos, here are some top tips to help you look your best on the course.
Wear sunglasses
A good pair of sunnies will hide the pain on your face and keep you looking cool. Better yet, if you get caught on a down-step, they’ll conceal any unfortunate sagging of the eyes.
Practise your finish line pose
Don’t wait until the last minute–practise your fun pose in the mirror ahead of time and keep it in your back pocket for when you cross the line. Throw your arms overhead, flash peace signs, finger guns or a thumbs-up, flex your biceps, or simply smile.
Avoid running near record chasers
In every race, you can count on a good handful of runners to be chasing a Guinness World Record in some outrageous costume–and getting plenty of camera time. If you run too close to them them, you’re practically guaranteeing you’ll be upstaged and stuck in the background of their spotlight moment. (Or you could do like the woman in the photo below did, and play up the record-chaser; that way you get to be part of the story, too.)

Smile and have fun
Enjoy the moment–your race photos will reflect this positive energy. A smile always looks better than a serious, pain-filled expression.
Just walk
If you’re dead set on flawless pictures, running is simply too risky. It might be best to just walk to avoid the down-step entirely–as long as you’re OK with a not-so-great time.
Don’t show up at all
At most races, there are photographers everywhere. If you don’t want your bad side to be caught on camera, the safest option is to stay in bed.
Your beauty sleep is a must, anyway!
